Flappers' marathon challenge for breast cancer

Two council staff will join friends and family this weekend when they take on the MoonWalk to raise money for charity.

Jo Anderson and Jane Bailey will make up the eight-strong Fenland Flappers as they tackle the 26.2 mile event in London.

Organised by breast cancer charity Walk the Walk, the 20th annual event on May 13 will see participants pounding the city streets through the night - wearing bras they have decorated with feathers and jewels to match this year's Roaring 20s theme.

Joining Jo and Jane, from Fenland District Council, are Jo's mum Angela Anderson, and friends Juliet Findley, Linda Tilbrook, Tanya Shepherd, Laura Turner and Sarah Stone.

The idea to take part came from Tanya, who had taken part in the MoonWalk before, and persuaded Jo and Jane to sign up first.

Jo, 32, the election and land charges team leader at FDC, and mum-of-three Jane, 45, the members' services and governance supervisor, said they didn't realise what a big commitment the challenge was at first.

"We were given a training programme to get up to 20-miles, our longest training walk, which we did at the weekend," said Jo, from March. "It's been tough, and we've found some of the longer walks harder than others, but the 20-mile one was best yet for all of us."

The team members have already raised a fantastic £2,500 between them for the cause, and they are hoping to cross to finish line in under eight hours.

Jane, from Chatteris, said: "The thing we're looking forward to most on the day is the finish line! But also seeing the sights of London at night, and taking in the atmosphere."

"We're looking forward to the camaraderie as well," added Jo. "The support we've had on our training walks, with people cheering and beeping their car horns, has been brilliant. It gives you a big lift and helps you carry on."

"The team has a target in mind of £4,000 and have been training really hard so any and all donations will be gratefully received" she added.

The team has also paid a huge thank you to everyone who has already sponsored them.
