Skills on the agenda at second free networking event

Developing skills and nurturing talent in Fenland's workforce will be the topic up for discussion at next week's free business networking event in Chatteris.

South Fens Business Centre

The second in a new series of events organised by Fenland District Council and its economic development arm, Fenland for Business, is being held at the South Fens Business Centre on Tuesday, June 27, from 10.30am to 12 noon.

The aim of the session is to give local organisations the chance to meet other businesses in an informal setting and discuss current local business issues with expert guest speakers.

On the topic of skills in Fenland, speakers will include:

  • The Skills Service. Working with businesses, training providers and schools, The Skills Service supports Fenland businesses to up-skill their current staff and attract young talent from amongst school leavers as well as helping to develop the knowledge, aspirations and employability of young people.

  • Metalcraft. Keen advocates of apprenticeships, Metalcraft will discuss how apprentices have benefitted its business and what their training academy can offer other businesses in the region.

  • The College of West Anglia. The college will share information on training courses and facilities available to local companies and their staff, and talk about the benefits of apprenticeships for businesses.

Going forward, the sessions will tackle different challenges and opportunities faced by local businesses and will be held bi-monthly in Chatteris. The last event held in April attracted around 20 delegates and focused on finance and funding.

Cllr Ralph Butcher, Portfolio Holder for Growth at Fenland District Council said: "This is a great speaker line-up that clearly demonstrates the number of opportunities there are locally for employers to up-skill their workforce and help the next generation prepare for work.

"The first event in April went down very well and we are confident that the combination of expert speakers, quality support and informal networking will continue to prove useful for Fenland businesses."

Alongside networking, attendees will also be able to discuss any professional or business challenges and opportunities with representatives from Fenland District Council.

Attendance at the event is free but delegates are encouraged to register ahead of the event. Register for a free place.
