Centre helps members to get functionally fit

Members of a Fenland leisure centre can try out one of the top fitness trends thanks to the arrival of new equipment.

Hudson functional fitness

The New Vision Fitness Hudson Centre in Wisbech has installed a new functional fitness framework designed to help members train in one of the most efficient ways possible.

"One of biggest trends in the fitness world is functional movement, which trains your body using natural, everyday motions," explained centre manager Laura Clarke-Green. "Doing exercises that reflect muscle use in day-to-day tasks helps ensure you move in the best way possible and also reduces the risk of injury."

Whether swinging on the monkey bars, getting to grips with the battle ropes or lifting the landmine, the centre's new set-up allows innovative workouts using movements that are more natural to normal life.

The kit includes a punch bag, TRX suspension cables, a landmine press, assisted chin-up band, weighted bags, monkey bars, rings, battle ropes and a dip machine.

Laura said: "Anyone can use the equipment and participate in this kind of training, whether they are an accomplished athlete or just starting out on their fitness journey. People can also use it individually or in groups, which adds a social aspect that you don't always get in the gym. It's been a great success so far."

The equipment is also being used for fitness class, with bootcamps every Thursday at 6pm and a new 'functional fitness class' starting on Tuesday mornings in October.

It can be used by members at any time around the classes, with staff offering training in groups or individually to get people started and programme reviews to help members incorporate the equipment into their fitness regimes.

Councillor Michelle Tanfield, Cabinet member for leisure services at Fenland District Council, which runs the centre, said: "Functional training is quite a trend right now in the fitness industry so it's great to be able to bring this facility to all members of New Vision Fitness."
