Teams of up to seven players, aged 14 and over, are being sought for a Christmas football tournament taking place at the Lime Avenue green on Wednesday, December 20.

The event, organised by Fenland District Council's Active Fenland team and Cambridgeshire children's coaching company, All 4 Sports, kicks off at 12noon and runs until 3pm.

There will be medals, trophies and goodies to be won, along with mince pies and refreshments for spectators and players alike.

For more information on the tournament and to enter a team, contact All 4 Sports in advance on 07979 346260. Players need be 14 and over, and will need to wear shin pads and suitable footwear.

The tournament has developed from the successful multi-sport sessions that have been providing turn-up-and-play style activities for young people in the Waterlees area.

The sessions, funded by the Community Activity Grant Programme from Sport England, Groundwork and Clarion Futures (the charitable foundation of Clarion Housing Group), encourage young people to become more active. They also provide opportunities for youngsters to socialise, and boost community cohesion.

Delivered by sports coaches from All 4 Sports, the sessions involve football and basketball and any other sports decided by those who attend. They currently take place in the brown hall at Orchard Primary School on Thursdays from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.

Councillor Michelle Tanfield, the Council's Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said: "Activity levels in Wisbech are lower than the national average, so it's great to see multi-sport sessions and now a football tournament being organised to really encourage residents to get together and get more active. This will be a great community event just before Christmas, and we hope to see as many people as possible come and join in the fun."

For more information about the Thursday sport sessions, contact All 4 Sports on the number above.

Information on other sporting opportunities and activities for all ages is also available on the Active Fenland website, Twitter and Facebook.
