The application deadline for the current round of the Glassmoor Local Environment Fund, which is open to groups from Whittlesey, Pondersbridge, Ramsey Mereside, Eastrea and Coates, closes on Tuesday, January 2.

Grants from £500 to £10,000 are available for projects that help improve the local environment in a way that also benefits the wider community. Larger bids will also be considered while funds are available.

Projects could include ones promoting energy efficiency, wildlife conservation, waste recycling and educational activities. The fund committee, which reviews applications and awards grants, is also interested in new and innovative ideas, as well as sustainable approaches to supporting the local environment.

Two other windfarm developments in Fenland also have grant funding available for similar environmental projects.

The Whitemill Environment Fund can offer grants of up to £10,000 to groups in Coldham, Ring's End, Friday Bridge and Elm, and again, larger bids can be considered while funds are available. The application deadline for Whitemill is Friday, February 2.

The Ransonmoor Community Fund is open to groups from Benwick, Wimblington and Doddington, and has grants of up to £5,000 available. Its closing date for the latest round of bids is Friday, March 2.

All three funds are managed by committees made up of Fenland District Council and other parish councils and representatives from the respective windfarm catchment areas.

Councillor Peter Murphy, Fenland District Council's Portfolio Holder for the Environment, urged community groups to make the most of the funding available.

"There are many voluntary, community and not-for-profit groups in Fenland that are doing great things for local people and the local environment," he said. "These windfarm environment funds are a great way for these groups to develop what they're doing and continue making a real difference to our communities. If you have some great ideas you need funding for, don't delay in making a bid."
