Like many other authorities, the Council is unable to provide or distribute sandbags.
Before flooding is forecast we recommend that you make arrangements for your own supply of sandbags. Stock levels usually run down quickly after flood warnings are issued, so it's better to be prepared.
Most local builders' merchants can supply sandbags and sand. Local sandbag suppliers can also be found by contacting builder's merchants, with phone numbers listed in the Yellow Pages.
A new type of self-inflating sandbag is also available which do not contain sand. They are filled with hundreds of absorbent crystals which turn into taut sandbags within five minutes of coming into contact with water. They can absorb over 200 times their own weight in water and usually come flat-packed in boxes of 10-12. Several companies offer this type of sandbag, with advice also available from the National Flood Forum.
