To approve the lease of 1 further property from Clarion as family temporary accommodation in Fenland

Decision Maker: Assistant Director

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Decision:

The Council currently leases 16 properties from Clarion for housing family households in temporary accommodation whilst undertaking the Councils homelessness duties.

This is a lease of one further property in Thorney Toll to help with our supply throughout Fenland towns and villages to provide such accommodation.

This ensures family households have a reduce risk of being placed in B&B which the Council is scrutinised on by Central Government to ensure that no families are in B&B for more than 6 weeks. This is also a very cost-effective solution for the Council. So better accommodation for family households delivered in a cost-effective way.

This also helps to bring a long-term empty property back into use for the benefit of Thorney Toll

Decision:

Daniel Horn, Assistant Director in accordance with Cabinet Decision 54/24 and the approved Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy and Action Plan to lease a property in Thorney Toll from Clarion for the purposes of utilising for Family Temporary Accommodation.

Reasons for the decision:

Alongside other initiatives to increase the pool of temporary accommodation across the district this helps ensure the Council can reduce the risk of placing families in B&B.

The proposal is in accordance with the cabinet approved strategy and action plan as set out in the web links above.

Alternative options considered:

Not increasing our pool of Temporary Accommodation. However, this increases the risk of B&B placement and also there has been specific interest from Ward Councillor and the portfolio holder to bring properties back into use in Thorney Toll and this proposal helps both priorities.
