An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Wisbech Port Authority team within Fenland District Council as a Marine Pilot on a 2-year fixed term contract.

The role requires the successful candidate to have current proven ship handling experience within the last 12 months. The core role is to take responsibility for the safe manoeuvring of a variety of commercial vessels along the port limits of Wisbech and Port Sutton Bridge or within the local pilotage district- any time during the night or day complying with all current legislation including being available for immediate call out, when rostered on duty.

The successful candidate will also be expected to provide support to the Harbour Master in organising and delivering against the Marine Safety Management system and accompanying systems of work including managing safety meetings, training exercises and run inspections and enquiries when required into marine accidents and incidents. You will manage the safe movement of vessels within the harbour limits and ensure documentation and certification is in line with the Port Marine Safety Code.

Other duties will include office assistance tug towing, dredging, bed levelling, buoy laying, maintenance of navigational aids, low water channel surveys, search and rescue and patrols, towing of leisure craft and hydrographic surveying so a background of working in commercial craft maintenance and repair and sound seagoing experience is essential. Local knowledge of the waters of the Wash is highly desirable.

You will be 'On Call' for Emergency response when required. Experience on smaller vessels such as tugs/dredgers would be desirable, but not essential as Full Training to Pilot Authorisation will be offered.

You will need to have the Ability to work flexibly and during unsocial hours to service shipping movements including weekends on a rostered basis. This is a small, dedicated team where a flexible and committed approach to joint working across the Marine Services team to deliver our collective priorities is essential.
